The history of the Spa dates back to 1086 – and
probably beyond – when it was listed in the Domesday
Book as “Lamintone”.
Leamington Spa is famous for its beneficial springs and the first of these was said to be discovered in 1480
outside the All Saints Parish Church. The second
saline spring was discovered by Benjamin Satchwell and
William Abbotts on 14th January, 1784.
In 1790 the third Spring was discovered and the fourth
in 1804 at Robbin’s Well in Victoria Terrace.
A fifth and sixth were discovered shortly after.
The springs became fashionable in the 18th and early 19th
century when wealthy people began to flock to the area
to enjoy the health benefits of the springs and their
Many of these people deserted the area with the advent
of the railway system and chose to take their leisure
time beside the sea but Leamington Spa has remained a
popular place full of history and a mythical aura.
