GO Libraries in Sheffield

Libraries in Sheffield With well over one million books in the area, Sheffield libraries are an excellent resource for information while you’re in the city.

However, they don’t just cover paper based resources, you can also get videos, CDs, DVDs and talking books for education or entertainment purposes, as well as use of the facilities to access the Internet.

Sheffield’s main library is Central Library [map] on Surrey Street close to the Town Hall and the Winter Gardens. This library is home to a host of smaller library services including the Business Science and Technology library, the local studies library, and the arts, social science and sports library, as well as the World Metal Index.

The Central Library is your one-stop shop for information on and information in Sheffield. From here you can find out information about all the other local libraries as well as helpful information if you are looking for something in particular in the city.

Central Library is also the main lending library in the city, although you have to live or work in Sheffield to borrow resources from any of the libraries, as membership is required. The lending library is open most days until 5:30pm except Monday and Wednesday when it is open until 8:00pm.

Aside from the main library there are around 27 local libraries spread through towns and villages across Sheffield. All have books and other resources available, however some have other useful features, for example at Highfield Library [map] you’ll find books in Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Farsi / Persian, Pashto, Somali, Turkish and Urdu. In Parson Cross Library [map] you’ll find a Job Shop and local information on clubs and societies in the area, while in Darnall Library [map] there are newspapers in Arabic, Bengali, English and Urdu.

Sheffield libraries also cater for homebound people and hospital patients with their mobile libraries and delivery and collection services.

You can get more information on Sheffield Libraries on the Sheffield Council website.
