GO Sport in Sheffield

Sport in Sheffield Sheffield’s most famous sporting offering may be their football teams but there’s plenty more when it comes to sport in the city.

Being home to Sheffield United FC, Sheffield Wednesday FC and the oldest club in the world Sheffield FC, if the beautiful game is a favourite of yours there’s plenty for spectators and players alike.

However there’s more to life than football and in Sheffield you can certainly try out that theory. You’ll find athletics, snooker and ice hockey all get a high billing in the city.

But if you prefer ice dance to ice hockey then check out what’s on at the Sheffield Arena, now known as the Hallam FM Arena [map]. The arena hosts a variety of events including show jumping and bike trials but ice dance fans are likely to appreciate the Holiday on Ice and Disney on Ice events that are on during the winter months.

And for those who want to follow in the footsteps of UK greats Torvil and Dean, there’s IceSheffield [map] close to Don Valley Stadium. As the National Ice Arena, here you can watch the professionals in action at the British Adult Championships and other events over the course of the year. Then, if you’ve got the skills, you can take to the ice yourself and show off your own double axels as part of the IceSheffield academy. If, however, your skills on the ice are limited at best, then you can enjoy one of the fun sessions or ice night events.

For a cool sport that the whole family can enjoy then head to Sheffield’s Ski Village [map], Europe's largest outdoor artificial ski resort. Here you can take skiing or snow boarding lessons to improve your technique or simply grab your ski equipment and hit the slopes. There are a number of different runs available from green runs through to black runs, and there are a variety of events and sessions to suit the tastes of all ages.

If you want to feel the adrenaline rush of a speed sport then you could watch the Sheffield Tigers speedway team in action. Speedway races are battles of pace on 500cc bikes, where a team of riders competes against another team for the points. You can see the Sheffield Tigers in action on their home ground at Owlerton Stadium [map].

Owlerton Stadium is also the home of greyhound racing in the area. With afternoon or evening racing on almost every day of the week, there’s always a chance for you to experience the highs and lows of dog racing action. There’s ample parking on site and plenty of catering facilities so you can really make the most of the buoyant atmosphere.

You’ll also find plenty of atmosphere at Don Valley Stadium [map] when the rugby league team, the Sheffield Eagles, take to the pitch. Although quite a new team they have had their fair share of highs playing in National League Division Two.

If you’d rather watch Rugby Union then you should head to a Sheffield RUFC [map] game at Abbeydale Park. As well as being able to see a variety of men’s teams in action ranging from under 8s to the adult first team, the club also have a women’s team, who play in the Challenge of North league, Division One.

Basketball is another sport in which Sheffield boasts a male and a female team. The Sheffield Hatters are the women’s team whose roots in the game go back to 1961. They are one of the best sides in the country with players regularly being called to play for their country. The men’s team is the Sheffield Sharks and they play their home games at the Sheffield Arena (now known as the Hallam FM arena). Formed in 1991, they have also had a lot of success winning several major championships.

Spectors will also find plenty on at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre [map]. The programme of events here cover a broad range of sports and in the past has included; International Indoor Bowls, International Boxing, International Volleyball, International Tenpin Bowling, National Karate Finals and National Netball.

Meanwhile those who want to get active can take trampolining lessons or learn a martial art like Karate, Taekwondo or Win Chun Kung Fu. The centre is also home to an excellent swimming pool with first class diving facilities and a programme of fitness classes that covers everything from Yoga to Salsa Fit.

Waltheof Sports Centre [map] also offers you several opportunities to get fit with a programe of classes as well as indoor and outdor football pitches, cricket nets, volleyball, basketball and netball facilities and a dance studio.

And for those who like something a little off the wall, why not brush up on your circus skills at the Greentop Community Circus [map]. You can learn everything from unicycling to clowning for fun or to gain a specific qualification.
