Bars in Sheffield
||As one of the
biggest cities in the UK and home of two popular universities,
Sheffield needs to have plenty of watering holes to
keep everyone happy. So whether you’re a real
ale drinker or a cocktail-loving clubbing queen, there’s
a bar in Sheffield you’re sure to love.
If trendy bars where the beautiful people hang out are
your thing, then your first port of call should probably
be Bar Sola [map].
Here retro browns and oranges meet a modern glass and
wood beam structure to create a unique, but stylish
location. The plastic chairs and leather sofas are draped
with people sipping award-winning cocktails and
Japanese bottled beer to a chilled out soundtrack. For
a little London chic in Sheffield this is the place
However before Bar Sola, there was the Halcyon and BRB
at the Hallamshire Hotel, both of which can be considered
as an alternative for cool customers. Located in the
former home of a local Lord, The Halcyon [map] is a pre-club bar where trendy-types congregate
for shots and a glass of wine while the DJ plays dance
music to warm up the crowd before the clubs open. BRB [map] on the other hand oozes with understated cool,
the funky surroundings giving people the chance
to socialise before the real clubbing starts.
For somewhere to drink that’s trendy and relaxed
24/7, there’s The Forum in Sheffield’s fashionable
Devonshire Quarter. During the day you can sample flavours
from their unique menu and after work you can relax
in the beer garden. In the evening it is transformed
into a great pre-club venue and if you’re looking
to get your groove on then you could hit the dance floor
and stay there until 1am.
However, if you’d rather ditch the trendy décor
for somewhere that offers a decent pint in a fitting
environment, Sheffield has venues for you. Winner of
the Sheffield and District CAMRA Pub of the Year, The Fat Cat [map] is the place to find real ale. The décor
and the service are nothing special but this pub attracts
the whole spectrum of beer lovers looking to enjoy traditional
original ales and even the odd glass of fruit wine.
If you like a good pint you’ll like this pub.
Closer to the rest of the city centre action and not
entirely without merit in terms of the surroundings
is The Banker’s Draft [map]. This pub
bridges the gap between trendy and traditional by serving
a variety of ales and ciders where you can indulge
your love of beer without being abandoned by friends
If you think your taste in bars falls into line with
Sheffield’s student population then you may want
to try Bar One [map],
part of the Sheffield Universities' Student Union, the
very studenty Cavendish [map] on West Street and the open plan Varsity [map],
a modern pub/club that attracts a pre-club crowd.
However if you’re just looking for somewhere to
enjoy a drink and a good atmosphere then head to the
chic but sociable Central Fire Station [map] on Division Street, The Hogshead [map] for a lunchtime drink and bite to eat or Fagan’s [map] an Irish pub with a friendly feel.
