GO Shopping in Liverpool

Shopping in Liverpool From the celebrity favourites in Cavern Walks to the high street classics in Clayton Square Shopping Centre, this city is a great place to give your credit card a bashing.

In fact there’s so much choice when it comes to going on a spending spree in Liverpool that you might not know where to start. So we’ve made it a little easier for you with our guide to some of the best shops and stores in the city. Here goes…

For starters why not visit one of the many department stores dotted around central Liverpool, including Marks and Spencer [map] and Lewis’.

Part of a well-known chain, Marks and Spencer’s offers a magnificent collection of cosmetics, gifts, jewellery, furnishings, and men’s, ladies’ and children’s clothes. Liverpool’s M&S also has a trendy cafe and a bureaux de change on the top floor.

Easily recognised by the famous naked statue above the main entrance, Lewis’ is situated opposite the Britannia Adelphi Hotel. The range of goods on sale includes clothing for all the family, electrical goods, perfume, cosmetics, furniture, and an interesting array of collectibles in the gift department. There is also a delicatessen on the ground floor, which offers an excellent range of cheeses, cooked meat, salami and freshly baked bread.

When it comes to shopping centres you’ll be spoilt for choice because Liverpool has five to choose from, although Quiggins is set to be demolished soon.

Clayton Square and St John’s shopping centre, both based in the city centre, offer a wide range of well known chain stores and independent retailers.

Clayton Square Shopping Centre provides stores such as Boots, Virgin Megastore, Body Shop, Principles, Oasis, The Disney Store and Wax Lyrical. Here shoppers can also find stalls in the centre, selling a variety of products, from mobile phones to household goods.

St John’s Shopping Centre, situated near Lime Street Station, was the city's original central shopping arcade and offers stores including Woolworths, Dunne's, Adams, Evans, and Thornton's, as well as smaller independent outlets.

If you’re looking for a more funky shopping experience then try the unique Liverpool Palace [map] in the heart of trendy Slater Street. Spread over three floors, this centre has become a hub of dynamic, fashionable activity and the home of some of the city's best-loved shops, selling everything from collectibles and clothes, to comics and music.

For designer boutiques, including Vivienne Westwood, get along to the Cavern Walks shopping centre on Mathew Street, the heart of Beatles-land. Here you’ll find the likes of Issy Crown, Joy and Pure Woman, all of which have a great range of classy men’s and women’s clothes. You’ll also find beauty shops here including Nail Nation [map], a favourite with Victoria Beckham, who can redesign your nails and offer jewellery for pierced nails.

Mathew Street [map] is also home to other designer stores including Reiss and Wade Smith, as well as the famed Beatles Shop. The store is an Aladdin's cave of Beatle-related items and memorabilia, including mugs, T-shirts, pins, badges, stickers, posters and hats. Shoppers can also browse through the rare Beatles collector's items such as the original porcelain Yellow Submarine dolls, a 1964 calendar and Beatles talcum powder.

If you’re looking for a bargain then check out one of Liverpool’s many markets, which sell everything from vegetables and flowers, to handbags and fabrics.

Dating back to the 1800s, Garston Market is the oldest in the city and has 50 stalls selling everything from fashion and beauty products, to hardware.

Great Homer Street Market is another of Liverpool’s oldest markets and it's situated on a busy main road leading to the city centre. This highly popular Saturday event offers everything from fresh produce to up-to-the-minute fashion, children's clothing, top quality fabrics and designer sportswear.

Mainly set indoors, Birkenhead Market has the usual supplies of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, fresh meat and freshly caught fish. But you can also buy sweets, cakes, toys, handbags, designer shoes, clothes, sportswear, household goods and electrical items.

If you fancy venturing outside the city centre then head towards neighbouring Ellesmere Port where you’ll find the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet Village. This is one of Europe's largest designer retail centres and is located just 30 minutes from central Liverpool. It offers 65 well-known designer and brand name manufacturers and all goods are sold with 30 to 50% off the high street prices.
