GO Football in Liverpool

Football in Liverpool With two top Premiership clubs, a popular League One side on your doorstep, and plenty of places to enjoy a kick about yourself, there’s always time for football in Liverpool.

The great rivalry between Liverpool FC and Everton FC has made the city a top spot for professional football that guarantees there is always potential to see a really great match.

To catch a glimpse of England star Steve Gerrard head to Anfield [map], where you can see the team in action on match days, or enjoy a tour of the museum and stadium at other times.

If your loyalty firmly lies with Everton, then you need to get along to Goodison Park [map], where you can watch all the goals or take a tour of the stadium, including the dug out and dressing room.

Liverpool’s other great team is Tranmere Rovers, who play at Prenton Park [map], only two miles from the famous Liver Building, but on the Wirral side of the River Mersey.

The team plays in the Coca Cola Football League One, which, due to a recent upheaval of the league system, is actually two divisions below the Premiership.

Although you may struggle to get tickets for Liverpool and Everton matches, very few games are all-ticket at Tranmere, which means you can just turn up before kick-off, pay cash and head through the turnstile.

If you prefer playing rather than watching, then you’re in luck because amateur football has really come of age in Liverpool since the opening of the Liverpool Soccer Centre [map] in 1999. The centre has helped to develop the game in areas where traditionally participation has been low, particularly among girls and women, people with disabilities and socially disadvantaged youngsters.

Liverpool’s commitment to providing training pitches for young and old has also helped football progress in the city. There are plenty of grass pitches around, which are normally available in the season August to April, and most are used by leagues and clubs.

You will also find indoor synthetic pitches at the many sports centres in Liverpool, and there are many parks and grass areas for a family kick about.
