GO Kids & Families in Edinburgh

Family Days Out in Edinburgh Unless the children in your life enjoy modern art or royal history you may think that Edinburgh is not the place for them. However despite its stuffy image there’s plenty for young people in the Scottish capital.

The National Museum of Scotland [map] is the latest museum to be added to Edinburgh’s vast number of attractions. Opened in 1998, the museum’s developers made the effort to get the input of over 800 children on what they would like to see in the museum and continued to work with their ‘junior board’ throughout the planning process, resulting in a museum which makes it fun to learn about Scotland’s people and past.

For a journey through space and time to a galaxy not so far far away… try Our Dynamic Earth [map] near the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Welcoming more than a million visitors since it opened in 1999 this interesting and imaginative attraction will captivate children and parents.

Another attraction that crosses the generational divide is the Museum of Childhood [map]. With toys and games from all over the world this museum conjures the images of childhood from the past and the present. Found on the Royal Mile this heart-warming attraction is the first museum to specialise in the history of childhood.

If the history of the Old Town is lost on your children then the Brass Rubbing Centre [map] may unveil the appeal. Housed in a 15th century gothic church on the Royal Mile entrance is free but there is a charge for brass rubbing.

Climbing a volcano is something you may expect on a more adventurous holiday but Edinburgh gives the whole family the chance to experience the thrill. Arthur’s Seat is a 822 ft. tall extinct (!) volcano in the heart of Edinburgh. The hike may leave you a little out of breath but it’s the stunning views from the top that are really breathtaking.

Other popular places to take the kids are Edinburgh Zoo [map] to see the largest colony of penguins in Europe and Commonwealth Pool for all the thrills and spills of the big indoor pool and waterslide complex.
