Alternative Eateries in Edinburgh

There’s only so much haggis one man or woman can stomach and if it’s time to try something different you’ll be pleased to know there’s a wealth of cuisine in Edinburgh that doesn’t once mention sheep’s stomach on the menu.

If you’re counting the calories head to Henderson’s Vegetarian Bistro [map], Hanover Street, for a range of healthy treats. Either eat in at the contemporary bistro and wine bar where you can choose from a wide range of traditional and international cuisine or visit the shop and salad bar next door for a top selection of locally and organically produced fruit and vegetables, as well as takeaway snacks and sarnies.

For the cooler than cool a visit to The Apartment [map], Barclay Place, is a must. Choose from the menu that’s divided into “CHLs” (Chunky Healthy Lines), “Slabs”, “Fish Things” and “Other Things”. The simple interior is particularly appealing to those who look for style and quality whilst preferring a no-frills décor.

With a wide selection of Indian restaurants in Edinburgh you’ll be spoilt for choice but we recommend you head for the top with a visit to Mother India [map], the Edinburgh sister to the famous Glasgow Restaurant, and located on Newington Road. Downstairs is a laid back diner which particularly appeals to students and those on a budget whilst upstairs is an altogether more formal environment. Both floors offer excellent and unusual Punjabi cooking.

Those who prefer their Indian cuisine without the meat will be pleased to know that Ann Purna [map] , St Patrick Square, is an entirely vegetarian Indian restaurant. Highly recommended by customers and critics alike a wide range of Asian ingredients are used to create some delicious cuisine.

The words “American” and “cuisine” often conjure up images of dodgy pizza parlours and greasy hot dog vendors so it’s nice to discover a restaurant that offers a high quality touch of Italian-American food.
Mamma’s [map] at Grassmarket is a vibrant and family-orientated restaurant that appeals to a wide range of diners, from couples to work parties who flock to Mamma’s for its great and unusual range of pizza and pasta. The menu includes value-for-money deals and with pizza toppings such as cactus and haggis – if you’re missing your fix – this is the place for a good social gathering.

Moving from Italy to France and La Garrigue [map], Jeffrey Street, is an altogether classier affair.

Jean-Michel Gauffre used to be executive chef at the city’s Sheraton Hotel but left to open La Garrigue [map]. The restaurant has a modern meets rustic interior and serves a wide selection of French cuisine from Languedoc including ham-stuffed rabbit leg, and tuna steak with basil dressing.
