GO ARt Galleries In Brighton

Art Galleries in Brighton See things from a different perspective by checking out the delights on show at Brighton's unique and fascinating art galleries.

Whether you’re into fine art, photography or fancy getting hands-on experience in the world of art, there’s a venue in the city-on-the-sea ready to take you into a whole new world.

The city’s main art establishment is the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery [map], which has a number of dynamic and innovative new galleries, including fashion and style, 20th century art and design, and world art. As well as these permanent galleries there is a continuing programme of temporary exhibitions along with a café and a shop.

In nearby Hove you’ll find the Hove Museum and Gallery [map], which has a film gallery celebrating Hove's role in the birth of cinema, two craft galleries displaying the South East Arts Craft Collection and a paintings gallery featuring displays of fine art.

Back in Brighton city centre is Fabrica [map], a contemporary art gallery based in a church that offers a hands-on, interactive experience of art for young and old.

The city also has its very own Arts Quarter, a series of small, interesting studios and shops under the King’s Road Arches where local painters, sculptors and toy-makers create and sell their products. This is the perfect place to pick up a unique Brighton souvenir and watch artists at work.

For photography and other forms of digital media head to the Brighton Media Centre [map] in The Lanes area, where you can visit the Cinematheque cinema and the Contact Gallery.

A leading contemporary art space, the Contact Gallery has a series of temporary exhibitions specialising in photography and painting. Past shows have included a photographic exhibition of ecstatic Tibetan rituals that had never before been chronicled, and a quirky look at the world of sports photography.

If you want to see collections by the artists of tomorrow, today, check out Gallery 73 [map] on St James's Street in Kemp Town, one of Brighton's more innovative art spaces that focuses on pushing first time and little known artists out into the limelight. It is run by a group of committed volunteers and along with painting and photographic exhibitions, the gallery also showcases sculpture, ceramics and occasional textile works.

Other art galleries worth seeing if you get chance are Hove Ikon Gallery [map], which displays Prismatics, a new art form of 3D light in colour, and the Phoenix Arts Association [map] that showcases contemporary visual arts exhibitions and holds regular art classes.
